Characteristics

STA (Stearyl Acrylate) is a highly purified C18 linear alkyl acrylate.
Due to its very long alkyl chain structure, STA exhibits several unique and characteristic properties.

It has been reported that poly(alkyl acrylates), such as poly(STA), show a permeation switching behavior at their melting point [1].
In addition, simulation studies have revealed that poly(STA) possesses a comb-like molecular structure [2].

These structural features are highly relevant to seed coating technologies, where controlled permeability and phase transition behavior are critical.
STA is therefore considered a promising alternative to Behenyl acrylate in such applications.

Furthermore, poly(alkyl acrylates) are known to exhibit sharp thermodynamic transitions [3], and shape-memory behavior has also been reported in STA-based hydrogels, with significant changes in Young’s modulus [4].

These properties originate from the long alkyl side chain, which induces a comb-like structure and amorphous/semi-crystalline phase transitions.
