Characteristics

GMEC is a methacrylate monomer containing a propylene carbonate (PC) moiety. The reactivity of this monomer has been widely studied [1–3]; however, it appears that it has not yet been commercialized.
Thermosetting coatings based on the cyclic carbonate–amine reaction are particularly attractive, as polyurethane coatings can be prepared without the use of isocyanates or tin catalysts under moderate conditions (e.g., around 80 °C) [1, 2, next page]. This enables the production of acryl urethane coatings without residual isocyanates or harmful tin compounds.
In addition, propylene carbonate is widely used as an electrolyte solvent in ultracapacitors due to its high polarity, excellent electrolyte solubility, and high boiling point. Therefore, polymers containing cyclic carbonate groups can dissolve large amounts of electrolyte, resulting in solutions (or gels) with high ionic conductivity [3].
